Outdoor lighting can completely change the appearance of a home after dark.
It can make entrances easier to see, add a welcoming touch to the front of the property, and make rear garden doors more practical to use in the evening.
Recently, we carried out an outdoor lighting installation at Taylor Close, Bedford, MK45 4GD, adding new wall lights to both the front and rear of the property.
But the job wasn’t simply about putting up the lights.
A key part of the installation was making sure the wiring was concealed wherever possible so that the finished result looked clean and properly integrated with the house.
Lighting Either Side of the Doors
At the rear of the property, we installed additional wall lights on either side of the doors leading into the garden.
The same approach was used at the front entrance, with additional wall lights positioned either side of the main door.
Having lights positioned on both sides of a doorway provides a more balanced appearance than having a single fitting on one side.
It also gives useful illumination around the entrance, making it easier to see the doorway and surrounding area when arriving home after dark.
The Wiring Matters as Much as the Light
One of the requirements for this installation was to avoid leaving visible wiring around the exterior of the property.
To achieve a cleaner finish, we chased the cables into the wall on the inside, allowing the wiring to be concealed rather than simply running it visibly across the surface.
This is one of those details that can make a big difference to the finished installation.
Once the lights are fitted and the work is complete, the homeowner should see the lighting - not a collection of cables running around the walls.
A Cleaner Look for the Front of the Property
Outdoor lighting is often one of the first things people notice about a house in the evening.
Adding matching wall lights either side of the front door creates a more symmetrical appearance and gives the entrance a more finished look.
It can also provide practical illumination around the doorway, particularly when coming home at night or welcoming visitors.
The aim wasn’t to make the lighting unnecessarily complicated. It was simply about positioning the fittings properly and making sure the electrical work behind them was kept as discreet as possible.
Bringing the Same Idea Into the Garden
The rear garden entrance received the same treatment.
Adding wall lights either side of the rear doors provides useful lighting around the transition between the house and garden while creating a more consistent appearance.
This is particularly useful for properties where the garden is used during the evening, whether that’s for entertaining, accessing outdoor areas or simply moving between the house and garden after dark.
Why Concealing the Cables Makes a Difference
When installing new lighting onto an existing property, there are often several ways to route the cables.
The quickest option isn’t always the best-looking one.
For this project, taking the time to chase the cables into the wall meant that the finished installation could be much cleaner.
It’s a little more work during installation, but once it's finished and the wall is made good, the difference is clear.
The lighting becomes part of the property rather than looking like something that has simply been attached afterwards.
A Small Upgrade With a Big Visual Impact
Outdoor wall lights don’t have to be a major project to make a noticeable difference.
At this Bedford property, adding lighting to both sides of the front and rear doors improved the practicality of the entrances while also giving the house a more balanced and finished appearance.
And because the wiring was concealed within the walls, the focus remains on the lights themselves rather than the electrical installation behind them.
