Good outdoor security isn't only about installing a camera and pointing it at the garden or driveway. The position of the equipment, cable routing, lighting and overall finish all need to work together.
Recently, we completed a home security installation at Alder Street, Bedford, involving the installation of two external POE cameras and external floodlights.
The aim was to provide the property with additional outdoor visibility and security while keeping the electrical and data cabling neat and protected.
Installing Two External POE Cameras
The project included the installation of 2 external POE (Power over Ethernet) cameras.
POE cameras are useful for installations where both data and power need to reach the camera. Instead of requiring a separate power supply at each camera location, the cameras can receive power through the network connection.
For a domestic installation, this can help create a cleaner and more organised setup, particularly when the cameras are positioned away from the main equipment.
As with any external installation, the positioning of each camera needs to be considered carefully to provide useful coverage while keeping the equipment securely mounted.
External Floodlights for Better Visibility
Alongside the cameras, we also installed external floodlights.
Lighting can play an important role in an outdoor security setup. Good illumination helps improve visibility around the property and can make cameras more effective at capturing what's happening outside, particularly when natural light is limited.
Combining cameras with external lighting provides both visibility and monitoring, rather than relying on either system alone.
Keeping the Cabling Protected
One of the key requirements for this installation was that all cables were to be enclosed in black PVC conduit.
This was important for both protection and appearance.
External cables can be exposed to weather, accidental damage and general wear, so suitable containment helps protect the installation.
Using black PVC conduit also provided a much tidier finish, allowing the cabling to follow the property rather than being left exposed.
For us, cable management is an important part of the finished job. The equipment may be the most noticeable part of an installation, but poorly routed cables can quickly take away from an otherwise professional finish.
Why Plan the Installation as One System?
The cameras and floodlights were installed as part of the same project, allowing us to consider the locations and cable routes together.
This meant we could plan where the equipment needed to go, how the cables would reach those locations and how everything could be contained neatly.
Good planning before installation helps reduce unnecessary cable runs and avoids having to make changes once equipment has already been mounted.
What We Installed
The completed work at the Bedford property included:
- 2 x external POE cameras
- External floodlights
- Black PVC conduit for all external cabling
- Installation and routing of the associated cables
- Final checks of the completed installation
The result was a cleaner, more organised external security setup with cameras and lighting working together to improve visibility around the property.
Small Security Upgrades Can Make a Difference
You don't always need a complicated security system to improve the visibility and monitoring of your home.
Installing a couple of well-positioned cameras alongside suitable external lighting can provide a practical upgrade, particularly around entrances, gardens, driveways and other external areas.
The quality of the installation matters too. Equipment needs to be positioned correctly, cables need to be protected, and the finished work should look like it belongs on the property.
