When homeowners need power in the garden, the solution isn’t always as simple as adding a socket to the nearest wall.
Recently, we carried out an electrical installation at a property on Crane Lane, Wixams, Bedford, where the homeowner wanted to improve access to power both inside and outside the house.
The job involved installing:
- 1 x external double socket in the garden
- 1 x additional double socket in the kitchen
Supplying both from the existing kitchen socket circuit via an external fused spur.
It was a relatively straightforward installation, but, as with any electrical work, the details of how the new sockets are connected and protected matter just as much as the finished result.
A Simple Upgrade to Make Everyday Life Easier
Garden sockets can be incredibly useful.
Whether you’re using garden equipment, powering outdoor lighting, charging tools, or simply needing an extension lead without running cables through an open window or door, having a properly installed external socket makes things much more convenient.
For this Wixams property, the homeowner also wanted an additional socket in the kitchen, giving them more flexibility for everyday electrical appliances.
Rather than relying on temporary extension leads, we installed permanent sockets as part of the electrical installation.
Planning the Installation Around the Existing Socket Circuit
Before carrying out the work, we needed to consider how the new sockets would be supplied.
The requirement was for both new sockets to be fed from the existing kitchen socket circuit, with the supply taken via an external fused spur.
This meant planning the installation carefully around the existing electrical layout and the route between the kitchen and the garden.
Whenever we’re adding new electrical points to an existing property, we don’t simply look at where the new socket needs to go.
We also need to consider the existing circuit, protection, cable routing, and the environment in which the equipment will be installed.
These checks help ensure that the completed installation is suitable for the property and its intended use.
Installing a Socket Outside Requires Different Considerations
An external socket is exposed to conditions that an indoor socket isn’t.
Rain, moisture, temperature changes and general outdoor use all need to be considered when selecting and installing equipment.
For outdoor electrical installations, appropriate weather-resistant equipment and suitable protection are essential.
The socket also needs to be positioned sensibly so it can be used conveniently while reducing unnecessary exposure to the elements.
This is one of the reasons we recommend having outdoor electrical work installed by a qualified electrician rather than simply extending an indoor circuit using a standard indoor socket.
Why Use a Fused Spur?
For this installation, the new sockets were supplied via an external fused spur.
A fused spur provides additional protection for the circuit supplying the new electrical points and allows the supply to be isolated when required.
Thecorrect arrangement depends on the existing circuit and the specific installation, so we assess the electrical system before carrying out the work.
The important thing is not simply adding another socket; it is making sure the complete installation is appropriately designed, protected and tested.
The Finished Installation
The completed work provided the homeowner with two useful improvements:
Inside: an additional double socket in the kitchen for everyday use.
Outside: a dedicated double socket in the garden, providing convenient access to mains power without needing to run temporary cables from inside the property.
The aim was to make the installation practical while keeping the work neat and integrated with the existing property.
